Pushkar, Oct 28 (IANS) The world famous Pushkar International Animal Fair 2025 has got its main attraction this year – the small but remarkable Punganur cow. This endangered breed, originally from Andhra Pradesh, is attracting attention for its unique size, minimal maintenance requirements and surprisingly high productivity.
Abhinav Tiwari, owner of Abhiram Breeding Farm from Jaipur, shared many information about this breed of cow and their participation in the fair.
He told IANS that the Punganur cow is only 28 to 36 inches tall and weighs around 150 to 200 kg.
He further said that despite its small stature, the cow eats only three kilograms of fodder per day and gives three to five liters of milk per day.
He told IANS that it was facing the threat of extinction. Tiwari said Punganur cow milk is rich in medicinal properties and contains A2 protein, which is known for its health benefits.
Interestingly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also has cows of this breed, due to which the interest towards Punganur cows has increased significantly in the entire country.
He stressed that these cows were brought to the Pushkar fair not for sale but to promote awareness and conservation of indigenous breeds. Along with Punganur cows, Tiwari has also brought miniature horses from his farm, which have become another major attraction for visitors.
Amidst the golden sand dunes of Pushkar, the tiny, native Punganur cow is adding charm and color to the fair while spreading a powerful message about the conservation of native breeds.
Tourists and livestock lovers from India and abroad are coming to Punganur to see, photograph the cow and learn about its heritage.
Experts say its adaptability to dry climate and low fodder requirement makes it ideal for Indian farmers.
The growing popularity of the breed may revive interest in native livestock conservation.
