Joe Cole said on TNT Sports: “Too much aggression [from Chalobah]I think we’ll hear from Eddie Howe after the game.” On BBC Radio 5 Live, Pat Nevin said: “Having the bells is risky! Trevoh Chalobah never got the ball, a challenge over Anthony Gordon’s shoulder. Big call for the ref not to give a penalty.”
Premier League Match Center explained: “The referee’s call to award no penalty to Newcastle was checked and confirmed by VAR – Chalobah’s contact on Gordon was ruled side-to-side in a shielding action and the ball was within playing distance.”
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was surprised by the Premier League’s explanation. “In my opinion it’s a clear penalty. I think it’s a free-kick anywhere on the pitch. The player went very aggressively at Anthony so I think it’s stonewalling.
“it [side-to-side shielding]The defender only sees Anthony, not the ball, and is very aggressive,”
