Britain’s 20,000 mile railway network is with an estimated 500 billion leaves annually. They cause significant autumn disruption by sticking and compressing moist rail under the wheels of low rail.
The resulting thick, slippery layer similar to black snow reduces the grip of the train and can prevent signallers from detecting the presence of the train on new track sections.
Motion restrictions are imposed in an attempt to reduce accidents, such as accidents between two trains outside a tunnel CeliceburyIn October 2021, Wiltshire in which 13 passengers and a driver required hospital treatment.

Lisa Angus, the reaction director of the network of network rail industry, said: “Our patti trains are unheard heroes of the British autumn, traveling to the length and width of the country to keep the railways operational.
“The scale of operation involved in advancing passengers through autumn is monumental: CTRL ALT DELEF and Leaf-Bustlers trains will have a distance of more than a million miles in our fleet, as well as deploying fast-reacted teams and using more technology than before.
“Our teams will be working non-stop to try and keep this autumn from the tracks so that passengers and goods services can run safely and firmly.”
