PSV Rue likely to have old boy Donyal Malen secure Champions League draw for Borussia Dortmund football news

PSV Eindhoven coach Peter Bosz regretted missing chances after missing a number of chances in their 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday. “In the second half, we had a lot of chances. It was a shame we couldn’t score the second goal,” Bosz told reporters after the game at Philips Stadium. Donyal Malen snatched a vital goal to give the Bundesliga giants a draw at his old club, but wasteful PSV were left wondering what might have been. The big question before the match was which Borussia Dortmund would appear: the team that topped the Champions League ‘Group of Death’ or the team that was struggling for continuity in the Bundesliga?

And it was a strange start in the eerie atmosphere of Eindhoven, with the home fans setting off fireworks at kick-off.

“We started very nervously, I think both sides were nervous in the first minutes,” Dortmund coach Edin Terzic said.

When the smoke cleared, the hosts had the better of the early exchanges, with Mexico international winger Hirving Lozano causing the Dortmund defense headaches down the left.

PSV midfielder Malik Tillman missed two gilt-edged chances in front of goal, once firing wide after a clever through-ball from experienced Dutch striker Luuk de Jong.

And the visitors punished PSV’s carelessness, taking the lead in the 24th minute of play when Malen fired a deflected shot into the top corner.

Malen had enjoyed a stellar season for the Dutch giants, scoring 55 goals in all competitions in just 43 games, and decided not to celebrate in front of PSV’s die-hard fans.

A frustrated Tillman somehow missed another goal on what looked to be an easy goal, this time with a header right across the face of goal.

It was then Belgium international winger Johan Bakayoko’s turn who fired a shot wide, leaving the home fans wondering if it was going to be one of those nights as they trailed 1-0 at the break.

PSV have not lost at home all season and started the second half on the front foot.

They soon leveled off.

Tillman redeemed his earlier mistakes by winning a penalty in the 56th minute, which De Jong calmly headed past Alexander Meyer.

Dortmund’s defenders were angry at the penalty award, insisting that veteran central defender Mats Hummels had hit the ball before it fell to Tillman.

Terzic described it as a “difficult decision” and even Bosz admitted: “You could see from the reaction of the Dortmund players that they did not agree with it.”

“Zero percent penalties. Zero,” Hummels himself told Prime Video after the game.

“Tillman was laughing all over. Bakayoko was laughing himself. They were all smiling for minutes afterwards.”

The controversial equalizer opened the game with chances at both ends, with Dortmund’s Marius Wolf forcing a sharp save from Walter Benítez in the PSV goal.

With 15 minutes remaining, Bakayoko danced through Dortmund’s defence, but failed to find any purchase on his shot – a summary of the night for PSV.

PSV midfielder Joey Veerman said: “I think we had complete control in the second half and we had big chances in the first half.”

“When you look at the whole game, we had better chances than Dortmund”, he said, “I think 1-1 is not such a bad situation to go back to Dortmund”.

Hummels admitted that his team had “let the charged atmosphere get to them” but was confident of progressing to the quarter-finals when the two sides meet again in three weeks.

Hummels said, “I saw very good Eindhoven today. In our home game, in the second leg, we just need to play better with the ball. Then, I am confident that we will progress.”

Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbach said, “We know we still have to play the second leg. Then, there will be 80,000 people on Champions League night. We are unbeatable there.”
