Protest against food insecurity sees Scottish Parliament sprayed with red paint, three arrested

The front of the Scottish Parliament has been spray-painted with red paint as part of protests against rising food insecurity.

The group’s ongoing campaign also urges supermarkets to cut the price of infant formula to March 2021 prices.

This Is Rigged has vowed to continue escalating operations until its demands are met.

At a demonstration in Edinburgh on Monday, campaigners claimed that one in four Scots had experienced food insecurity in the past year.

This Is Rigged said on Instagram: “We are asking the Scottish Government to meet with us to discuss establishing one community food hub for every 500 homes in Scotland.

“Until we see the basic human right to food met, we will continue to disrupt, resist, redistribute, and take back what is ours.”

The Scottish Parliament said criminal damage was a police responsibility and advised “anyone arriving at Holyrood today may experience delays”.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Three people were arrested on suspicion of disrupting the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh following a protest at around 10.45am on Monday 11 March 2024.

“The investigation is ongoing.”
