Tirupati, Nov 6 (IANS) Sri Venkateswara University in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati on Thursday suspended a professor for allegedly behaving inappropriately with some students during an interaction session following an incident of ragging.
Professor S Vishwanath Reddy of the psychology department was suspended by the university after an inquiry committee submitted its report.
After this, some junior students alleged that in the name of interaction session, the professor allowed seniors to rag them.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Tata Narasinga Rao issued the order to suspend Professor Vishwanath Reddy. The order mentions the allegation that he admitted some first semester M.Sc. behaved inappropriately towards. (Psychology) students during an interaction session held on November 1 in a classroom for senior and junior students of the department. It was also alleged that the professor left junior students unattended in the classroom without arranging for constant faculty supervision during senior-junior interactions.
As per the orders issued by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Vishwanath Reddy will remain under suspension until the disciplinary proceedings against him are concluded.
The professor has also been directed not to leave Tirupati during the suspension period.
Earlier, the affected students, along with parents and leaders of student groups, went to the SV University police station and demanded immediate action against the professor. Students demanded police protection.
Due to the arrival of large number of students, a situation of tension was created in the police station.
The affected students have alleged that Professor Vishwanath Reddy encouraged senior students to rag them. He said he had lodged a complaint against the professor with the university authorities three days ago, but no action was taken.
He also demanded action against senior students indulging in ragging. He also claimed that he was being pressurized not to complain about ragging.
Police have registered the case and started investigation.
