Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer says he was sexually abused at boarding school when he was 11

Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer says he was sexually abused as a child.

The 59-year-old detailed how he was sexually assaulted and beaten by a female staff member while he was at Medwell Hall boarding school.

He said in his memoirs that at 11 he was abused by an assistant housemistress, which traumatized him so much that he self-harmed at the thought that she might leave school.

Earl Spencer, who said he had been in the company of “devils” for his entire life after the abuse, wrote: “There seemed to be an informal hierarchy among her prey…she would choose each term. A boy slept with her and would use him for sex.

“Her control over the fascinated boy is complete because we crave feminine warmth, and crave attention and affection.”

Earl Spencer said he lost his virginity to an Italian prostitute at the age of 12 as a result of the abuse he suffered.

He wrote: “There was no joy, no sense of arrival, no sense of maturity in this act.

“I now believe I was simply completing the process triggered by the assistant nurse manager’s abnormal focus.”

He described his experience at the school as “absolutely hellish” and wrote: “I regularly witnessed deep pain that still flashes in the eyes of my Medwell peers.

“Many of us leave Medwell with demons sewn into the seams of our souls.”

Sky News has contacted Medwell-Hall for comment.

Excerpts from the memoir have been serialized in the Mail on Sunday.

A spokesman for Medwell Hall School told the publication the school was “dismayed” by the allegations of abuse, adding “we are sorry”.

The spokesperson added: “Sadly, it is difficult to understand what was sometimes considered normal and acceptable practice at the time.

“Almost every aspect of school life has changed significantly since the 1970s. At the heart of the changes is the protection of children and the promotion of their welfare.”

Earl Spencer’s book, “A Very Private School,” will be published on March 14.
