Prince Harry and Meghan Markle call on parents to challenge social media firms

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have called on parents to challenge social media firms, accusing them of exploiting children through manipulated algorithms.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also expressed concern over the “explosion of uncontrolled artificial intelligence”, highlighting their belief that the benefits of technology are intrinsically linked to its risks. He referenced a ParentsTogether study where researchers, acting as children, encountered harmful interactions with an AI chatbot every five minutes.

“This was not content created by a third party. These were the companies’ own chatbots working to further their own corrupt internal policies,” Prince Harry said in Spring Studio. Manhattan On Thursday night he and Markle were named Humanitarians of the Year by the nonprofit Project Healthy Minds. “But here we find hope: These families are not facing this alone.”

To build on their movement of families fighting for online safety, the couple also announced Thursday that their foundation’s parents network will be joining forces with ParentsTogether.

His comments came at the annual gathering of Project Healthy Minds, a millennial- and Gen Z-powered technology nonprofit that runs a free online marketplace aimed at connecting patients with the exact mental health care they want.

The couple have made youth mental health a cornerstone of their philanthropic work since launching the Archewell Foundation in 2020 after stepping away from the working royal family. Through its network of support for families who have experienced online harm and support from youth-led organizations shaping responsible technology, the nonprofit works to make digital spaces safer.

Prince Harry has previously stressed the need to hold powerful social media companies accountable. He warned last year that young people were experiencing an “epidemic” of anxiety, depression and social isolation driven by negative experiences online.

According to several studies, few guardrails exist to reduce children’s exposure to age-inappropriate content, including pornography and violence, on social media, where they also face cyberbullying and sexual harassment.

This issue may also be considered personal for the couple. Markle has been open about her mental health struggles, which she attributes to intense pressure from the royal family and tabloid attacks. Harry’s own personal life has been the subject of much tabloid reporting, including targeted phone hacking and surveillance.

Prince Harry brought his awareness campaign to a reception hosted by men’s health nonprofit Movember on Wednesday night. In conversation with a television journalist brooke baldwinHe emphasized that men should not feel isolated because when he talks to them they hear the same struggles over and over again.

“The biggest obstacle is the belief that no one will understand,” he said in comments re-shared on his blog. ,Loneliness Makes you believe you’re the only one, which is rarely true.”

“Culture makers” such as Prince Harry and meghan markle According to Phil Shermer, CEO of Project Healthy Minds, they are important voices in the mental health conversation because they inspire their vast audiences to seek care.

But Shermer stressed that “the moment of inspiration is fleeting” and it’s important for celebrities to take the extra step of partnering with trusted organizations that can truly provide care.

Project Healthy Minds board member Daly said mental health is now the most common topic that comes up when fans recognize him publicly.

“I was like, ‘I want to put all my eggs in this basket’ because I still see the power when I tell my story, it unlocks so many other people who tell their story,” Daly told The Associated Press. “And I think that’s the process – that’s how decriminalization works.”

According to Shermer, the money raised Thursday night will help the nonprofit create new filters that will break down the preferences for care options and in-person or telehealth service options by their insurance providers. They compared features of travel planning sites like Expedia that allow users to choose the times, prices, and airlines of their flight options.

Shermer said that having a recognizable host on the daily “helps make it cool to talk about your feelings.”

“It’s not just the absence of a stigma,” Shermer said. “It’s also the presence of a sense of pride that being vulnerable, being honest, being open, that’s really your greatest superpower.”

Thursday night’s other honoree was Kellen Jackson, co-owner and chief brand officer of the Indianapolis Colts. nfl The executive – who has spoken openly about dealing with anxiety – has continued the team’s staunch support of mental health following the death of her father and beloved former boss Jim Irsay.

Project Healthy Minds recognized Jackson with its inaugural Sports Visionary of the Year Award, presented by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Jackson leads her family’s Kicking the Stigma initiative, which raises awareness of mental health disorders and attempts to expand access to care. Indiana And country.
