Prince Edward to land another prominent royal role

Prince Edward will take on another royal role, filling in for the treatment of his brother King Charles, who is suffering from cancer.

Buckingham Palace has announced that the Duke of Kent, who has served as Colonel of the Scots Guards for 50 years, is stepping down and handing over his responsibilities to Edward, Duke of Edinburgh.

The 88-year-old royal, who is a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, will mark his departure from the role in London on Sunday.

The Duke of Kent said of his title: “To serve as Colonel of the Scots Guards since 1974, the longest time anyone has ever held this position, is a real honour, which will always fill me with joy.”

“Over the years I have seen the work of the Scots Guards in peacetime and wartime and witnessed first-hand their bravery, selfless courage and devotion to duty,” he continued.

“To my fellow Scots Guardsmen, I am extremely proud to have served you all. I am delighted that His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh will continue to support you in everything you do and work hard to protect your great legacy.”

Edward, Duke of Kent, will be saluted for the final time as Colonel of the Regiment at Trooping the Scots Guards Parade during a commemorative service at the Guards Chapel at Wellington Barracks.

The title transfer comes as Prince Edward becomes the “leading figure” of the royal family and the monarch recovers from cancer treatment, sources familiar with the matter said, citing insiders. The Telegraph.
