Prince Andrew is facing A private prosecution of the disgraced royal has come under intense scrutiny because of his former friendship with a pedophile financier. Jeffrey Epstein,

Campaign group Republic announced on Thursday it would instruct lawyers to launch a private lawsuit against Prince Andrew following sexual assault allegations.

According to its website, the pressure group works with the aim of “replacing the monarchy with an elected head of state and a more democratic political system”.

It has previously run a number of campaigns and demonstrations against the monarchy, including a recent protest outside Andrew’s home, the Royal Lodge.

What is private prosecution?

Most prosecutions in the UK are brought by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) on behalf of the Crown.
