Andrew is now an ‘ordinary member of the public’, minister says

Andrew Mountbatten Windsor is now “an ordinary member of the public” after he appeared to encourage the King’s brother to co-operate with any investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, a minister has said.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Business Minister Sir Chris Bryant was asked whether he thought there should be a legal process.

He told the programme: “First and foremost, he is now an ordinary member of the public, and I would not, as a government minister, advise any ordinary member of the public as to how they should comply with their legal requirements and so on.

“But I would have thought that any decent person would want to cooperate with any investigation going forward.”

He later said: “As I said, he is now an ordinary member of the public, so it is not a matter for the Government how he proceeds.”

MP says monarchy ‘needs to be held accountable’

A York MP has said the monarchy needs to be “accountable” in the wake of the King’s decision to strip Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his titles.

Rachel Maskell told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I think the world has moved on, and we need to hold the monarchy accountable in every way, not least to the public.

“When we saw 80% of the public saying take those titles down, I’m sure there’s relief across the country now that that’s been done.”

Ms Maskell, who represents York Central, introduced a bill in the Commons to make it easier for the monarch to remove titles, suggesting the law still needed to be changed.

She said: “We know that colleagues have ended up in prison, for example, so I think we need to look at the whole system.

“And my Bill would enable people with all sorts of peerages, baronets and dukes and princes and princesses to remove those titles, a mechanism that could be put forward for all circumstances, not just one circumstance.”

MPs supported King’s decision

Politicians have backed the King’s decision to strip Prince Andrew of his titles and Royal Lodge residence.

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said: “I’m afraid that the whole Jeffrey Epstein saga and everyone who’s touched on it, from Prince Andrew to Peter Mandelson, has shown that the public has no business dealing with any kind of sexual abuse, sexual crimes, particularly involving minors. And I think that’s absolutely right.”

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said Charles was absolutely right to do so.

He added: “It is clear that Andrew’s position had become completely untenable, bringing disgrace to his office and embarrassment to the country.”

Stephen Flynn, leader of the Scottish National Party at Westminster, said: “The right decision and an important moment for Epstein’s victims.

“I hope that those who were elected to Parliament and decided to defend by inaction rather than speak out are now regretting their decision.”

Prince Andrew gives up all royal titles

Andrew will no longer hold the titles of Prince or Duke of York and will be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, effectively reducing him to the status of a commoner.

He was born with the title of Prince and on the morning of his wedding he was given the title of Duke of York by his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. It was a title to which the Queen held great personal affection, having been held by her beloved father, King George VI, before his accession to the throne.
