Mountbatten Windsor: Where did Andrew’s new name come from?
Andrew has been formally stripped of his titles and will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
Anti-German sentiment led King George V to adopt the name Windsor in 1917, over his father’s house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
The royal family name of Windsor was confirmed by Queen Elizabeth II after her coronation in 1952, but eight years later the then-Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh decided that they would like their own direct descendants to be identified from the rest of the family with a different surname.
It was therefore announced in the Privy Council that descendants of Queen Elizabeth II, other than those with the style of Royal Highness and the title of Prince or Princess, or by female descendants who marry, would bear the name of Mountbatten Windsor.
Mountbatten was the surname of Prince Philip, the Anglicized version of his mother’s family name Battenberg.

“I would love the opportunity to tell my sister’s story at the palace, because it’s one thing to see someone on camera when you see them face-to-face, but when you see them face-to-face, we can really convey that emotion and really understand the story that not only she has, but for the many survivors that are there.
“If the king is saying that he stands with the survivors and their victims, then meet us, talk to us.
“We are real people with real stories who can affect real change and I think my sister did something phenomenal that says advocacy can affect change, advocacy can lead to justice, and it may take a long time, but I would welcome that conversation with King with open arms.
“I’ll be in London tomorrow.”
