Prime Minister Modi’s remarks came after more than 600 lawyers, including Harish Salve and Bar Association president Manan Kumar Mishra, wrote to the Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud, accused “vested interests” of trying to put pressure on the judiciary and malign the court, especially in corruption cases involving politicians.

Yesterday, the All Manipur Bar Association also wrote to Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, stressing the need to speak out against “despicable attacks” on the judiciary. In a separate letter from more than 600 lawyers, they said the tactics used by vested interests “are damaging our courts and threaten the fabric of our democracy.”
Chief Justice Chandrachud’s leadership is crucial in these “tough times” and the Supreme Court should remain strong, they said, adding that now is not the time for dignified silence.
The letter also targets a group of lawyers, without naming them, and claims they defend politicians during the day and then try to influence judges through the media.
