President says Philippines will continue dialogue with China to ease tensions in South China Sea

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on China on Monday for dialogue to prevent more ship collisions and the use of water cannons in the South China Sea.

Marcos said the Philippines continues to dialogue with China and is exhausting all options to talk to Chinese leaders so as not to escalate tensions in the waterway.
He added that he hoped the recently concluded joint maritime activities with Japan, Australia and the United States would reduce maritime incidents with China.

On Sunday, the defense forces of the four countries conducted a “maritime cooperation activity” involving five warships in the South China Sea.

Later this week, leaders from Japan, the United States and the Philippines will hold a summit in Washington to discuss recent incidents in the South China Sea, among other issues.

The Chinese Embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
