Nainital, Nov 4 (IANS) President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday highlighted the country’s progress on the economic front and called on students to get involved in nation building and use their knowledge to create an egalitarian society.

Addressing the 20th convocation of Kumaon University in Nainital, the President said, “Convocation may be seen as the culmination of formal education, but all students must keep alive the yearning for learning throughout their lives.”

The President said, education inspires students to serve the country and society with humility.

President Murmu said that education is the foundation of development of a country and the education system should not only develop skills and moral values but also strengthen the character of the students.

The President on Monday attended a function organized to commemorate 125 years of the establishment of Raj Bhavan, Nainital.

On this occasion, the President said that just as Rashtrapati Bhavan is a symbol of the republic in independent India, similarly Raj Bhavan is a symbol of democratic system in the states.

He said, in this way, after the formation of Uttarakhand state, this building has become a part of the progress of Uttarakhand.

The President said that in a parliamentary system, the Governor is the constitutional head of the state’s governance.

The framers of the Constitution determined the powers and duties of the Governor after much deliberation. The people of the state consider the royal palaces as a place of worship. Therefore, all members of the Governor’s team are expected to adopt the ideals of simplicity, humility, morality and sensitivity.

The President also appreciated the continued progress and prosperity of Uttarakhand. He expressed confidence that Governor Lieutenant General Gurmeet Singh (Retd) and his team will continue to provide invaluable inspiration to the residents of Uttarakhand and the state will continue to progress.

President Murmu addressed the Uttarakhand Assembly in Dehradun on the occasion of the silver jubilee of the formation of the state.

He said that the state should move forward on the path of development while preserving the gifts of nature.
