Huntsville, Onts. -A three -day meeting of the country’s premiere is going on today, and the first item on the agenda is discussed with indigenous groups.
Premier Ontario’s cottages are gathering at the Derhast Resort in the country and the business and tariffs are expected to be the main subject, especially when they meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday.
But earlier he is all set to discuss with other indigenous groups with leaders of First Nations, Metis National Council and The Native Women’s Association of Canada.
This meeting comes when indigenous communities have expressed concern with federal and provincial laws, which means a way to rapidly track major infrastructure projects that the economy is facing tariff effects.
The federal law known as Bill C -5 allows the cabinet to give federal approval for large projects in national interest bypassing existing laws, while Ontario’s Bill C -5 has allowed its cabinet to suspend the provincial and municipal laws through the construction of “Special Economic Zone”.
Nine Ontario First Nations has challenged laws in court and is worried that they will not have meaningful consultation.
Carney hosted a meeting with hundreds of first nation heads last week and some heads said that they saw an insufficient response to the concerns for weeks they had been getting up for weeks, others left the meeting “carefully optimistic”.
Ford has stated that during the meeting this week, premiere will also talk about emergency management, energy security, sovereignty and national security, health and public safety.
