Prematureness

New analysis shows that diet rich in fruits and vegetables, yet low in meat and dairy, can prevent around 15 million global deaths annually.

A report of 2025 Eat-Lancet Commission reduced this ‘Planetary Health Diet’ to 27 percent, which with low rates of premature death risk, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other chronic diseases.

The diet mainly contains whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes such as lentils and kidney beans, which contains only moderate or small amounts of fish, dairy and meat.

Researchers wrote: “Currently, all national diet planets are largely distracted from the health diet, but a change in this pattern can prevent about 15 million deaths (27 percent of the total deaths worldwide) per year.

“Such an infection will reduce the rates of multiple specific non-communicable diseases and promote healthy longevity.”

Experts pointed to the environmental benefits of the diet, stating that it could reduce the demand for resource-intensive foods such as red meat, causing greenhouse gas emissions and land and water cuts.

Diet advises people that people eat whole grains (about 150 grams per day or three to four servings per day), fruits and vegetables (500 grams or at least five servings per day), nuts (25 grams or one serving a day), and legumes (75 grams or one serving a day).

This may include animal foods such as red meat (200G or one serving up to 200G), poultry (up to 400g or two servings per week), fish (up to 700g or two servings per week), eggs (3-4 per week), and dairy (service to 500G or milk, yoga or cheese).

The diet also asks to limit added sugars, saturated fat and salt – often found in processed foods.

Dr. Dr, Assistant Director of Research and Policy at World Cancer Research Fund. Helen Croker said: “The Commission offers clarity on the important challenge of supporting healthy foods that are durable and accessible to all globally.

“The planetary health diet established in this report is associated with better health results – and research that we have funded also supports such diet for people after the diagnosis of cancer.

“It is attractive that healthy diets can align with the most durable globally, but now we need to look at countries that apply policies to improve access to them.”

Lancet report found that the current global Food system Contribute to 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and is the largest driver of “planetary border transition” through climate, biodiversity, freshwater consumption and their effects on changes in using land.

The boundaries of the planets are defined as thresholds that keep the “life support” system of the planet – on which humans trust – stable and healthy.

Researchers stated that, although sufficient food is produced globally, about half of the world’s eight billion people (about 3.7 billion) have no reliable access to healthy food, a clean environment, or living wages.

“The transforming food system is an important environmental and social challenge, but a safe climate system and a healthy planet for us to return to a healthy planet,” said Johann Rockstrom, Commission’s Co-Speaker and Director of Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.

“How we produce and consume food, we affect the air that we breathe, the water we drink, the soil that grows our crops, and increases the health and dignity of workers and communities.”

Conclusions suggest whether the whole world has moved to the health diet of the planets and had strong climate policies to reduce emissions in all areas, greenhouse gas emissions may be more than half-equal to removal of emissions from all coal-powered power plants.

The Commission also called for action to protect the remaining forests, wetlands and other natural habitats to preserve biodiversity.

The report states that governments can take action to promote healthy food through taxes on unhealthy products, offering subsidies for fruits and vegetables.

Line Gordon, Commissioner and Director, Stockholm Regillies Center at Stockholm University said: “Private sector can play an important role in change, but an effective food system change needs to ensure that the decision is to make decisions good for the public and preserved by improper corporate effects.”
