“Praise Gautam Gambhir for KKR’s win, blame Shreyas Iyer”: West Indies legend criticizes double standards

Former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop criticized trolls for targeting Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer. Despite KKR topping the table, Iyer has been facing severe criticism from fans on social media, who have credited mentor and former captain Gautam Gambhir for the franchise’s excellent form this season. Going to the X, Bishop shut down several trolls and questioned the fans for showing double standards by blaming KKR for their win and being critical of their defeat.

While Gambhir has certainly brought the winning mentality back to KKR, Bishop highlighted Iyer’s respectable record as captain during the last season.

“Shreyas became DC’s captain in 2018, after GG stepped down after DC missed 5 of its first 6 weigh-ins. DC then finished the season winning 4 of their next 8 matches. 2019 DC 3rd, 2021 injured and only 8g weight, so KKR 2022, new franchise 2024,” Bishop replied to the fan.

Questioning double standards, Bishop argued: “So when they win GG gets the praise. If they lose Shreyas gets the blame? Or if they lose would you say it’s GG’s fault Is?”

Since returning to the franchise as a mentor, Gambhir has been quite active in the dugout, providing tactical support to Iyer during timeouts and breaks.

Speaking at the press conference on Sunday, KKR fast bowler Harshit Rana also credited Gambhir for his tactical genius.

On Sunday, red-hot Sunil Narine scored 81 off 39 balls as KKR defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 98 runs and topped the IPL table.

After being invited to bat first in Lucknow’s final home game, Narine’s stormy performance with six fours and seven sixes took Kolkata to 235-6.

Two-time champions Kolkata bowled out Lucknow for 137 runs in 16.1 overs, registering their eighth win in 11 matches and almost securing a place in the playoffs. Second placed Rajasthan Royals have played one match less.

The top four teams will advance to the playoffs with the final on May 26 in Chennai.
