Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the government on Tuesday extended the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami, Jammu and Kashmir (JeI) by five years for continuing activities against the security, integrity and sovereignty of the nation.

He also said that anyone threatening the security of the country would face brutal action.

He wrote on Twitter, “Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policy of zero tolerance against terrorism and separatism, the government has extended the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami, Jammu and Kashmir for five years.”

The Home Minister said that the organization has been found to be continuing its activities against the security, integrity and sovereignty of the nation.

The organization was first declared an ‘unlawful association’ on February 28, 2019.

In a notification, the Union Home Ministry said that Jamaat-e-Islami, Jammu and Kashmir has been involved in activities which are prejudicial to internal security and public order and have the potential to disrupt the unity and integrity of the country.

The Home Ministry has listed 47 cases registered against JeI and it also includes an NIA case for collection of funds used to encourage violent and separatist activities.

The funds were also used by active cadres and members of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Taiba and other terrorist organizations through a well-established network of their cadres to organize violent protests, create public unrest and communal disharmony. AHET was formed by the top leadership of JEI and seven top leaders including accused Ameer Mohammed Shamsi, who was a trustee of AHET.

The Home Ministry said that the JeI is in close touch with terrorist organizations and is continuously supporting militancy and insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere.

JEI is supporting claims to secede a part of Indian territory from the Union and is supporting terrorist and separatist groups fighting for this purpose by engaging in activities and expression intended to disrupt the territorial integrity of India . It said it is involved in anti-national and subversive activities aimed at creating discontent in the country.

The Home Ministry said it is of the opinion that if the illegal activities of JeI are not immediately curbed and controlled, it will take the opportunity to escalate its subversive activities, including attempts to create an Islamic state from the territory of India and carry it forward Will go. Support separatist movements, extremism and incite violence in the country.

The Home Ministry said that the Central Government is strongly of the opinion that in view of the activities of JEI, it is necessary to declare it an “unlawful association” with immediate effect.

Therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (37 of 1967), the Central Government hereby declares that Jamaat-e-Islami, Jammu and Kashmir, as an unlawful association for a period of five years, the notification said.
