Possibilities for the next Wolves manager: Edwards and Ten Hag on shortlist as O’Neill withdraws

wolves became the latest Premier League Following the defeat to Fulham the club sacked Vítor Pereira as their manager, and betting sites have compiled a list of favorites to take over Molineux.

The Portuguese, who joined Wolves in December 2024 after a spell at Al Shabab, was nominated for the league’s Manager of the Year award last season after avoiding the drop, but the club has only managed to pick up two points in its first 10 games so far this season.

The loss of key players including Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait Nouri meant the task was always going to be more challenging this season, and that proved to be the case as Wolves made a winless start to 2025/26.

Reports have emerged that the 42-year-old now regrets not leaving before the start of the new season, but while he remains a promising coach, Wolves will now have to look elsewhere as they look to avoid being relegated this term.

Wolves are bottom of the league so far with just two points after eight defeats and two draws, and whoever comes in will have a tough task on their hands, as recent results have shown.

Surprisingly, former boss Gary O’Neill was an early favorite for the job and he inspired talks with the club about a return. football betting sites To reduce his odds of becoming the next Wolves manager.

However, it has been reported that the 42-year-old has turned down the chance to get his old job back, leaving the Premier League strugglers to look elsewhere for the next head coach.

Homecoming of former Wolves stars?

Current Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards is seen by bookmakers as the most likely option to take on Wolves, although it would be a surprise move for the former Luton boss given his team currently sit second in the Championship with just two defeats all season.

The Teessiders could replace Wolves if things remain the same and Edwards has dismissed rumors of a move to Molineux, describing them as pure speculation.

However, Edwards made 100 appearances for Wolves as a player and also had a brief stint in coaching with the club, taking charge of the academy team, while also having a brief stint as interim Wolves manager.

The timing doesn’t seem right for Edwards right now, but could it be right for another former Wolves favorite in Robbie Keane?

Keane, who began his playing career at the Old Gold at the age of 17, has reportedly thrown his hat in the ring in search of his first managerial position in English football.

The former Republic of Ireland international is currently in charge of Hungarian side Ferencvaros, having previously managed Israeli outfit Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Former Premier League boss in the running

Several ex-Premier League managers are in the early running for the Wolves post, with two of them being ex-Manchester United managers.

Eric ten Haag has been mentioned in connection with the work. The Dutchman left Old Trafford with the team struggling and then added to his recent embarrassment by being sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after just three competitive matches in charge.

However, he is understood to be on the options list and remains high on the market betting apps,

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is someone for whom a return to the Premier League could be attractive even in these circumstances, with the former United boss having had no success since leaving Old Trafford. He took a few seasons off before joining Besiktas earlier this year, but he only lasted seven months after the Turkish team were relegated from the Conference League in August. A return to the top leagues in Europe could be perfect for the Norwegian, as no matter how precarious Wolves’ position is, he has little to lose and much to prove.

Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is also on the list despite recently leaving Celtic amid allegations of a toxic environment at the Glasgow club.

Rodgers is an interesting candidate for the job after enjoying mixed success in recent years. While his record at Celtic was impressive, the depth of the Premier League challenge at Wolves will make the task more difficult.

Michael Carrick is probably the manager for whom this job would make the most sense. He enjoyed a successful stint at Middlesbrough despite missing out on promotion, and is a more logical next step in his career than some of the other names on this list.

The same can’t be said about the other three managers in the running, starting with former Porto boss Sergio Conceicao. The Portuguese won three Primeira Liga titles in his homeland and while he is currently managing at the lower level with Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, the Wolves job is unlikely to be one that could bring him back to European football.
