The Election Commission has decided to install GPS tracking systems on all vehicles used for polling purposes in West Bengal, an official said. Communications to this effect have been sent to poll workers, he said today.
“The GPS tracking system will be used to monitor the movement of EVMs and other voting materials from the Distribution/Decentralization Centers and Receiving Centers (DCRCs) to the polling stations the day before the election and ensure that no tampering occurs during transportation. He said the poll body has asked the government to take immediate action if any discrepancy is found, besides questioning the drivers of the vehicles concerned and the staff in charge of the EVMs.
Meanwhile, the Commission today appointed Arnab Chatterjee, Joint Secretary, School Education Department, as Joint Chief Electoral Officer.
Mr. Chatterjee succeeds Rahul Nath, an official order said.
The seven-phase Lok Sabha elections in the state will begin on April 19.
