A BJP delegation, including prominent leaders like MPs Locket Chatterjee and Agnimitra Paul, was today forcefully stopped by the West Bengal Police from heading towards the troubled area of Sandeshkhali. Ms Chatterjee and others have been taken to Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar.

Sandeshkhali, located in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, has recently become the epicenter of protests and violence, with locals accusing Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, especially Shajahan Shaikh, of atrocities, land grabbing and sexual harassment. is charged.

The BJP team, which included Locket Chatterjee and Agnimitra Paul, both serving as general secretaries of the state unit of the BJP, were on their way to meet the women of Sandeshkhali and listen to their grievances. The visit was planned amid the backdrop of sustained protests and allegations of human rights violations.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had earlier this week issued a notice to the West Bengal state government and the police chief, expressing concern over the ongoing violence and rights violations in the region.

Unrest escalated in Sandeshkhali yesterday, with angry locals setting fire to properties of TMC leaders accused of harassing villagers. West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Kumar vowed to take decisive action against the criminals.

Case against Sheikh Shahjahan

Earlier today, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) registered a case against TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan, the central face of the Sandeshkhali controversy, on charges of money laundering. Raids are going on at six different places in connection with the case. ED has also sent summons to Sheikh Shahjahan.

The women of Sandeshkhali have accused Sheikh Shahjahan of allegedly indulging in forceful land-grabbing activities and sexual harassment.

Shahjahan has been evading law enforcement since a mob allegedly linked to him attacked ED officials during a search operation related to the ration scam on January 5.
