A palestinian Attacker hits a man with his car and then stabs a young woman in northern israel On Friday, both were killed, police said, as the Israeli defense minister ordered an immediate military response to what he said was the attacker’s west coast Hometown.

The attack began on Friday afternoon in the northern town of Beit Shean, where a Palestinian man drove his vehicle into people, killing one person and injuring a teenage boy. He then rapidly drove to a highway, where he stabbed the woman, and wounded another man near the entrance to the city of Afula. According to officials, it was here that the attacker was shot.

israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu The victims were identified as teenager Aviv Maor and 68-year-old Shimshon Mordechai. Paramedics declared both dead at the scene.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said he was shocked by the “horrible killing spree”. He said Israel is “committed to strengthening the security response in the region to strengthen this challenging border and, of course, for the full protection of residents.”

Soon after, Israeli forces began massing troops near the Palestinian town of Qabatiya, where Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the attacker was from.

Katz said he had ordered troops to take “forceful and immediate action” against “terrorist infrastructure” in the city.

“Whoever aids or sponsors terrorism will have to pay the full price,” he said.

It is common for Israel to carry out raids on West Bank cities where attackers come from or to demolish the homes of the attackers’ families. Israel says this helps detect terrorist infrastructure and prevent future attacks. Rights watchdogs describe such actions as collective punishment.

Over the past few weeks the raids have been carried out in the Qabatia area, which is in the northern West Bank near the major city Jenin.

On 20 December, Israel’s military said they killed a man in Qabatiya who “had thrown a stone towards soldiers.” It later said the killing was being reviewed, after Palestinian media broadcast brief security footage that shows the young man emerging from an alley and being shot by soldiers as he approaches them without throwing anything.

The Israel-Hamas war, which began with a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, has killed thousands of Palestinians in Gaza. This has also led to an increase in violence in Israel and the occupied West Bank, with attacks by Palestinian militants as well as violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians.

In September, Palestinian attackers opened fire on a bus stop during the morning rush hour JerusalemAccording to Israeli officials, six people were killed and 12 others were injured.
