Jammu, Nov 10 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Police have recovered 350 kg of explosives and an assault rifle near New Delhi and arrested two doctors in this connection.
Police recovered explosives, possibly ammonium nitrate, and an assault rifle in Faridabad, near the national capital, officials said.
The massive seizure came days after police arrested a Kashmiri doctor from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh for putting up posters in support of terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed in Srinagar, official sources said.
Official sources said Faridabad’s recovery followed revelations made by Dr Adil Ahmed Rather during his interrogation.
The explosives and weapons were kept with another doctor named Muzammil Shakeel. The arrested Shakeel is also a resident of Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir and works at Al-Falah Hospital in Faridabad.
Faridabad Police Commissioner Satendra Kumar Gupta said 20 timers were also found along with 350 kg of explosives. He said a pistol, three magazines and a walkie-talkie set were also recovered.
On October 27, posters supporting the terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed were seen in Srinagar. The local police investigated the matter and CCTV footage showed Rather putting up the posters. He was tracked to Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh and arrested last week. Police learned that Rather was working at the Government Medical College, Anantnag, till October last year.
When the police searched his locker in Anantnag, an assault rifle was found. Based on the information he shared during interrogation, the police seized explosives in Faridabad.
Officials said the explosives and weapons were recovered in a coordinated operation by Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana police.
Rather was earlier charged under the Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
According to sources, the doctor’s alleged involvement shows that terror networks are now recruiting highly educated professionals.
Police sources said they do not yet know what the plan was behind collecting the explosives so close to the national capital, adding that a thorough investigation is underway to find out more.
It is also being investigated how such a large number of explosives were transported so close to the national capital without being detected.
Srinagar Police registered a case after posters promoting Jaish-e-Mohammed were found in several parts of the city. During investigation, CCTV footage showed a person putting up posters, who was identified as Rather.
