He thanked the medical staff for taking “extraordinary care” of the constable, saying, “We are extremely grateful for the tremendous support, kind messages and well wishes we have received from the community, Jack’s colleagues, friends and the emergency services.”

The constable had been on the job for only four months when the attack took place.

“Our family wants to let us know that Scott is getting stronger every day and today, he woke up for the first time,” she said. “There is still a long way to go in his recovery, but this is a positive sign. We want to thank the public for the support, messages and well wishes shown to Scott and our family during this difficult time.”

NSW Health said on Tuesday that 12 people injured in the attack were being treated in hospital.

The condition of four of them is critical but stable.

In the wake of the incident, New South Wales is set to pass stricter gun laws, ban the display of terrorist symbols and crack down on protests.

The proposed law is expected to be approved in the upper house of the state parliament on Tuesday.
