Kolkata, 30 September (IANS) has made special arrangements this year, in the dialect to protect the jewelery adorned in several puja mandaps in several puja mandaps in Kolkata.
Police have deployed two policemen with rifles in 11 out of those 13 Pooja Mandaps, while strict security arrangements have been made in the remaining two.
According to sources in Lalbazar (City Police Headquarters), the work of policemen will have to protect the gold and silver jewelery of the idols of Durga.
Arrangements have been made for all 13 such puja committees where a large number of gold and silver jewelery have been used to decorate the idols.
In addition, two police officers along with service pistols and two policemen with rifles will protect jewelry at a puja mandap in Muchipara area of Central Kolkata.
In a puja pavilion in the Benipukur region, two policemen with rifles are on duty to protect the idol jewelery. In many mandaps, jewelery is beautified for a short time. However, the police will be placed on the guard as long as the idols have jewelery. Apart from guarding jewelery, policemen and officers will also keep an eye on the idol so that outsiders or any visitor is not very close to it. At the same time, sufficient number of CCTV cameras have been installed in those 13 puja pavilions.
A senior Kolkata Police official said, “Since the price of jewelery is worth crores, special security arrangements have been made to save them. A large number of visitors have a thrill of such mandaps during the five -day festival. Therefore, there is a danger of theft,” a senior official of the Kolkata Police said.
This is a tradition among some worship organizers that beautify the idol of Goddess Durga Gold Jewelery. The jewelery is counted and placed on the Durga Idol.
Before immersion, the Pooja Committee shuts down it and keeps it in its custody.
Pooja committees themselves arrange to protect the jewelery. However, this year the police also took an initiative to tighten security.
