Kolkata, Oct 13 (IANS) Police have arrested one more person in connection with the gang rape of a second-year medical student from Odisha in West Bengal’s Durgapur, taking the total number of arrests to four.

Police said on Monday that the arrest was made last night. The arrested person is a temporary employee in Durgapur Municipal Corporation. He will be produced before the Durgapur sub-divisional court later in the day, where the police will seek his custody.

At the same time, another accused is being searched in the case. The police had registered an FIR against five people, four of whom have been arrested. On Sunday, all three accused were sent to police custody for 10 days.

Meanwhile, the male friend of the medical student, with whom she had gone out that fateful night, has been detained and is being interrogated by the authorities.

According to the police, DNA test of all the people arrested in the Durgapur incident will be conducted. The police is making arrangements for this.

Meanwhile, a delegation from Odisha reached Durgapur on Sunday. It is alleged that he was not allowed to enter the hospital and meet the medical student. Representatives of the Women’s Commission from Odisha will come to Durgapur on Monday and will try to meet the medical student. They will give a complete report to the Odisha government after looking at the situation.

On Friday, a second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped outside the campus in Durgapur when she had gone out for dinner with her male friend.

According to the police, the student had come out of the campus with a male friend for dinner when a group of men on motorcycles attacked them and made lewd remarks.

The men allegedly chased the friend, dragged the student to a forest area behind the campus and gang-raped her. They also snatched away his mobile phone and threw it away.

The male friend returned from the college along with others and found the injured student on the ground. He was taken to a local hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. A complaint has been lodged against five people at Durgapur New Township Police.
