Sydney:
A man who was trapped in a Brisbane sewer for more than 30 hours was hiding from police rather than trying to recover his lost phone, as he initially claimed, police said on Wednesday.
The man’s underground escapades are believed to have started when he allegedly collided with a police car in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A Queensland Police Service spokesman “claimed that at approximately 4.20am” the man’s Ford Falcon “reversed and hit” an officer’s vehicle, “causing serious damage”.
“The damaged Ford then fled the area” and was later involved in another incident in which the vehicle’s occupants fled on foot.
The 38-year-old man allegedly entered the sewers looking for a place to hide.
The stranded man, who was initially spotted by a passerby on Sunday, refused to help, saying “no bro, I’m fine,” adding that he was looking for his missing phone.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Monday after a resident heard heavy breathing coming from the drains.
“A 38-year-old man was found around 11 a.m.,” police said.
Brisbane has been experiencing wet weather for several days with heavy rain pouring down on him and this man was trapped inside.
He was said to have suffered scrapes and colds and was taken to Mater Hospital in a stable condition.
