Police arrested two in Facebook donation fraud in Srinagar

Srinagar, May 31: In a fast and decisive action, the Srinagar police busted an online fraud racket by incorporating a fake medical donation appeal on the social media platform (Facebook).

According to a police spokesperson, “On May 30, 2025, police station Novata received a written complaint from Munir Ahmed Mishjar son of Mohammad Sadiq of Mughal Masjid, stating that an unidentified journalist uploaded a picture of his sister with his sister for a surgery, who appealed for a surgery. Cheating and exploitation.”

Accordingly, a case was registered under Section 318 (2) and 319 (2) of the Joint Code of India (BNS) and investigation was initiated on a case V V

During the investigation, the administrator of the Facebook page included in the fraud post was identified and arrested as Mohammad Latef Lone son of Ali Mohammad Lone, a resident of Pulwama. Another accused, named Jokura, who lives in Jokura, was also identified in Gulab Bagh of Zakura, the rich son of Mohammad Yusuf Khan, a resident of Jokura.

Investigation revealed that he had provided bank account details in which fraud donation was being collected.
Both accused persons have been arrested.

Investigations are on to identify and catch other persons involved in the scam.

Meanwhile, media personnel and public are strongly advised not to share or attach to the said Facebook post, as it is part of a fraud scheme. Disseminating such misleading materials and false information can lead to a criminal purpose and can cause additional crisis for the victim’s family.

The J&K police urged the public to be vigilant and reported any suspect/illegal online funding activities to the nearest police station.
