Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit West Bengal on Saturday, December 20, to address a rally in Nadia and unveil highway projects, amid rising political tension over the ongoing SIR exercise in the state.

PM will address a public meeting in Taherpur, a Matua dominated area of Nadia.

The visit comes as the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress has consistently opposed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, alleging that a large number of genuine voters, especially refugee Hindus, are at risk of being disenfranchised due to it.

BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar, who represents Ranaghat Lok Sabha seat – where Taherpur is located, claimed that fear was being deliberately spread among the Matua people about the SIR.

He said, “We hope that the Prime Minister’s message will dispel those apprehensions and rumours.”

Chief Minister Banerjee has already led anti-SIR rallies in Nadia and North 24 Parganas, two adjacent districts that share the border with Bangladesh and where Matuas have a significant presence.

58,20,899 names have been excluded from the draft voter list published after the counting phase, reducing the number of voters to 7.08 crore. Nearly 1.36 crore entries have been marked for ”logical anomalies”, while 30 lakh voters have been classified as unmapped – all of whom are likely to be called for hearing.

For the Matua, a Dalit Hindu community that has been migrating from Bangladesh for decades due to religious persecution, the practice has revived concerns over identification and documentation.

PM will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of about two National Highway projects 3,200 crores.

He will inaugurate the four-laning of 66.7 km long Barasat-Krishnanagar section of NH-34 in Nadia district and lay the foundation stone of four-laning of the 17.6 km long Barasat-Barajguli section in North 24 Parganas district.

Officials said these projects are expected to serve as an important connectivity link between Kolkata and Siliguri, thereby boosting trade, tourism and economic activities in the southern and northern parts of the state.
