Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE)
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Mandir in Abu Dhabi in the presence of spiritual leaders of the Swaminarayan sect.
The Prime Minister wore a light pink silk dhoti and kurta paired with a sleeveless jacket and shawl to attend the ceremony of dedicating a temple to the people.
Global Aarti events are also held simultaneously at over 1,200 Swaminarayan temples around the world built by Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), with Prime Minister Modi also participating in the ‘aarti’ event. Earlier, he also met people from different faiths who contributed to the construction of Hindu stone temples.
Prime Minister Modi also addressed a rally after the inauguration of the BAPS Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi.
The BAPS temple was built on 27 acres of land in Abu Mreikhah, near Al Rahba near the Dubai-Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Highway, at a cost of approximately Rs 7 billion.
According to the temple authorities, this magnificent temple is built in the style of ancient architecture and creation mentioned in the Hindu scriptures Shilpa and Sthapathya Shastras, which describe the art of temple design and construction.
“Building methods here are integrated with science and technology. More than 300 high-tech sensors have been installed on each floor of the temple to measure temperature, pressure and movement (seismic activity). The sensors will provide real-time data for research. If the If any earthquake occurs in the area, it will be detected by the temple and we will be able to conduct research,” Swami Brahmaviharidas, head of international relations at BAPS, told PTI.
No metal was used in the construction of the temple, and fly ash was used to fill the foundations, replacing 55% of the cement in the concrete mix, reducing the temple’s carbon footprint.
In February 2018, the Prime Minister inaugurated the temple project and construction began in December 2019.
BAPS stands for Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). The organization is named after Bhagwan Swaminarayan, a religious leader in the late 1700s.
According to the BAPS website, it is a socio-spiritual Hindu faith with roots in the Vedas, started by Bhagwan Swaminarayan (1781-1830) in the late 18th century and established by Shastriji Maharaj (1865-1951) in 1907.
BAPS claims to operate more than 3,850 centers and 1,100 temples worldwide. The group is also behind the Akshardham Temple in Robbinsville, New Jersey, the largest Hindu temple in the world outside of India.
