Pilot killed in crash at Imperial War Museum airport

A pilot has died in a plane crash at Imperial War Museum (IWM) Airport in Duxford.

The man was in his 50s, from the Bedfordshire area and flew a General Aviation Cirrus SR22 aircraft.

No one else was aboard the private jet when it crashed at the airport on Tuesday afternoon. cambridgeshire.

Despite the “best efforts of medical personnel,” the pilot was pronounced dead at the scene, museum officials said.

An IWM spokesman said: “Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

“Cambridgeshire Police have informed next of kin who attended the scene of the accident yesterday.

“The aircraft was a private general aviation Cirrus SR22 based at Duxford. There were no other passengers.”

The spokesman also said police have now handed the investigation over to the Air Accident Investigation Unit, which remains at the scene in Duxford.

A spokesman for East of England Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 1.40pm on Tuesday to reports that a plane had crashed at Duxford Airport.

“Two ambulances, three ambulances, three hazardous area response team vehicles and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance attended the scene.

“Sadly, despite the best efforts of all emergency services, a man was pronounced dead at the scene.”

IWM Duxford said on its website it would remain closed on Wednesday and Thursday but “expected to reopen to the public on Friday”.
