“Farmers are currently facing huge challenges and if they need support to maximize the benefits to the environment, especially the benefit of water quality and biodiversity.”
He said that the policies of the government that would affect the future of farming in England should “identify the correct scale of the impact of this industry on the country’s environmental flexibility”.
He said: “The findings of this report clearly reveal that farmers should be supported for the supply chain and the government to support low pollution and more integrated pig and poultry system, which in turn helps clean our rivers and recover our legally binding nature and meet the climate goals.”
A spokesman for the Department of Environment (Defra) said: “We share public concern about the health of our waterways and are committed to cleaning our rivers and cutting agricultural pollution.
“We have updated our guidance on farming regulations for water to cut the run-off in waterways and doubled funding for the environmental agency form inspection to comply and support permanent agricultural businesses.”
