Boss South West Water has returned to profit after rising sales by more than a quarter after rising water bills and the scorching heat.

Pennon, which also owns Bristol Water, Bournemouth Water and SES Water, revealed improved financial performance earlier this year despite criticism over a waste water leak.

The London-listed business told investors it made a pre-tax profit of £65.9 million for the six months to the end of September, down from a loss of £38.8 million the previous year.

Water revenue increased 26% year-on-year to £519 million, driven by tariff increases and higher demand in the hot summer months.

This reflected higher prices for suppliers and infrastructure to help pay for water companies’ investments in improving their environmental performance.

The average bill for South West Water and Bournemouth Water customers increased by 32%.

Meanwhile, water usage among Pennon’s customer base was higher than last year, following the UK’s hottest summer on record, according to the Met Office.

Pennon said it is working to tackle pollution incidents under its watch, and is investing in its services “as summers get hotter and drier”.

The company said pollution incidents in its wastewater network were halved in 2025 compared to 2024, with storm overflows reduced by about 45%.

It comes after the business agreed to pay £24 million in July over a wastewater leak following an investigation by regulator Ofwat.

This money will be spent towards investment and financing over the next five years.
