Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene as a murder investigation began.
Sources said that the jail was locked down immediately after the incident.
The 48-year-old man was sentenced to 29 years in prison in December 2013 after admitting to several sex crimes, including attempting to rape a fan’s child.

The disgraced singer was arrested following the execution of a drugs warrant at his Pontypridd home on 21 September 2019, when a large number of computers, mobile phones and storage devices were seized.
Analysis of the device revealed Watkins’ corrupt behavior.
Earlier in 2023, he was stabbed in an incident at the same prison, in which he reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being held hostage for six hours by three other inmates.
In 2019, he appeared in court again keeping the phone behind barsand described his fellow prisoners as “murderers, mass murderers, rapists, pedophiles, serial killers – the worst of the worst”.

A statement from West Yorkshire Police said: “At 9.39am today (Saturday), staff at HMP Wakefield called police reporting an assault on a prisoner.
“Emergency services attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
“Detectives from the Homicide and Major Investigation Team are investigating and inquiries are continuing at the scene.”
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident which occurred at HMP Wakefield this morning.
“We are unable to comment further while police investigate.”
