paul scholes He has admitted that the gossip about a big-money move to Manchester United led to his “biggest regret in football”.

“It was crazy to do it because I’m at my dream club, Man United. It was horrible. My heart was breaking just thinking about it, I feel so bad for doing it.”

At the turn of the millennium Scholes was at the peak of his powers as one of the best midfielders in the world, while Man United were just a year away from winning the treble.

Neville, Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott also appeared in the episode, with the quartet supporting Scholes, saying he had every right to try his luck.

“It was a lot more than what I was getting at the time – probably more than double (his United salary),” Scholes recalled of the offer. “I remember seeing ‘£30 million for Inter Milan’ or something on the back of the newspaper, but I never heard anything about it after that. I clearly said ‘no’ to Harry.”

Neville suspected that Inter had contacted the club and Ferguson responded by immediately shutting down the notion of a transfer, so Scholes never heard anything official.

Scholes remained a one-club man at Old Trafford for the rest of his career, becoming a genuine United legend by making 716 appearances over two decades.
