Hyderabad, Nov 20 (IANS) A major accident was averted when a private travel bus collided with a chemical tanker in Telangana’s Mahabubnagar district on Thursday.

The collision caused chaos due to the leakage of hydrochloric acid (HCl) from the tanker and dense chemical smoke. The accident occurred near Macharam in Jadcherla mandal on the Hyderabad-Bengaluru National Highway (NH 44).

According to the police, the sleeper bus of Jagan Travels hit the tanker filled with acid from behind, causing the leakage. Dense chemical smoke engulfed the area.

Panic spread among the passengers, who escaped safely through the emergency exit.

A police officer said that there were 30-40 passengers in the bus. No one was injured in the accident. Travel company arranged alternative bus for passengers

Fire engines reached the spot and poured water to control the smoke. Fire fighters later controlled the leak.

The tanker was coming to Hyderabad from Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. The accident, which occurred around 6.30 am, caused a massive traffic jam near the Macharam flyover.

Everyone heaved a sigh of relief as no one was harmed in the collision and subsequent chemical spill.

The Telugu states have witnessed a series of accidents involving buses in the past month.

On November 3, 19 people lost their lives in a head-on collision between an RTC bus and a tipper truck in Rangareddy district of Telangana. A speeding truck carrying construction material hit the bus, which was going from Tandur to Hyderabad. Many passengers were buried under gravel.

Nineteen people were burnt to death when a private bus caught fire after crushing a motorcycle lying on the road following an accident near Kurnool city in Andhra Pradesh on October 24. A massive fire broke out due to sparks and fuel leakage from the bike.

On the night of November 3, a private travels bus overturned in Eluru district of Andhra Pradesh, killing one person and injuring 10 others. The accident occurred when the Bharati Travels bus, which was coming from Eluru to Hyderabad, overturned at a turn in Jubilee Nagar.

One person was killed and eight others were injured when a private travel bus collided with a truck in Sri Sathya Sai district of Andhra Pradesh on November 4.

On November 16, two people were killed and six others were injured when an RTC bus collided with a parked truck in Jangaon district of Telangana.
