At least 37 people were killed and 13 others were injured when a passenger bus plunged into a ravine in southern Peru early Wednesday after crashing into another vehicle, officials said.
Walther Oporto, health manager for the Arequipa region, told local radio RPP that the bus hit a pickup truck and that it went off the road at a turn, falling more than 200 meters (more than 650 feet) onto the banks of the Ocona River.
The bus had left the city of Chala, a mining region in southern Peru, and was heading towards the city of Arequipa.
Fatal bus accidents are not uncommon in Peru. The cause of Wednesday’s crash is unclear, but officials have previously said that reckless driving and excessive speed are behind many of these incidents.
