On Saturday, Olympic village director Laurent Michaud said the ban on intimacy would be lifted for the 2024 Paris Games and 300,000 condoms would be provided to the 14,250 athletes staying in dormitories.
during an interview sky news“The joyful atmosphere here is important, it’s a big deal,” said the Olympic Village Director.
An intimate ban was implemented during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Athletes are being asked to limit physical contact with each other — including sexual contact — and stay six and a half feet away from others to stop the spread of the disease, People reports.
Mr Michaud told Sky News: “Working with the Athletes’ Council we want to create something where athletes can feel welcoming and comfortable.”
While intimacy will be allowed again at the Olympics, athletes will no longer be allowed to indulge in other vices.
“Of course, there was no champagne in the village, but they could have all the champagne they wanted in Paris,” Michaud said. “We will offer over 350 meters of buffet including cuisine from around the world… I am sure the athletes will be happy to enjoy some French specialties here.”
Sky News reports that this is the most expensive Olympic construction project to date. By the time the torch is lit in July, Paris expects to have spent about $2.1 billion.
Meanwhile, handing out condoms is an Olympic tradition. According to CBS Sports, organizers have been distributing contraceptives to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS since the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Even during the 2020 competition, 150,000 condoms were distributed.
