Paramedics resign after Flintshire attack

A paramedic says she decided to quit her job after she was attacked while trying to help a patient.

Julie Owen, a paramedic with the Welsh Ambulance Service, said she was verbally abused and spat at by a patient’s daughter.

After a 20-year career, Ms. Owen said she was no longer interested in the job she once loved.

“I have experienced many types of violence and assault over my 20-year career and I thought this was the last one I was prepared to deal with,” she said.

“They kept piling up and one day it became too much. I feared for my life that night and it had an impact on me that I didn’t expect.

“Is it too much to ask for a safe escape?”

Ms Owen was attending a medical emergency with a colleague in Shotton, Flintshire, when the patient’s daughter became aggressive.

“She threw glass at us and spat on us”

Ms Owen added: “She was verbally abusive to us throughout and became aggressive when we went to give her mum pain relief.”

“She threw glass at us, spat at us, walked up to us and tried to hit us.”

After calling the police, the patient’s daughter was arrested.

She said: “I have decided to hang up my boots and take up another role within the service which means I will have less contact with patients.”

“It’s a very sad way for me to end my career as a road paramedic.”
