Palestinians renew bid for UN membership during Gaza war

The United States could reportedly use its Security Council veto power to undermine the proposal.

United Nations:

The Palestinians have formally resumed their bid to become full members of the United Nations, according to a letter sent by the Palestinian UN envoy on Tuesday and seen by AFP.

Palestine has had observer status at the world body since 2012 and has lobbied for years for full membership, which would amount to recognition of Palestinian statehood.

In a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Palestinian U.N. envoy Riyad Mansour requested that the Security Council reconsider this month a resolution dating back to 2011 “based on instructions from the Palestinian leadership.” Apply.

The letter was forwarded to the committee, according to documents seen by AFP.

Mansour has said many times in recent months that joining the United Nations is the top priority for Palestinians in the face of Israel’s military offensive on the Gaza Strip and the October 7 attack by Hamas.

Any request for membership of the United Nations must first be recommended by the Council and then approved by a two-thirds majority of the General Assembly.

The U.N. General Assembly voted to grant Palestinian observer status in November 2012 after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas applied for it in 2011 but it was never brought to a Security Council vote.

Observers believe that the Palestinian proposal to join is unlikely to pass the General Assembly because the United States, Israel’s closest ally, may use its Security Council veto to derail the proposal.

The Arab League, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Non-Aligned Movement sent a letter to Guterres on Tuesday supporting the Palestinian bid, which was also seen by AFP.

“We would like to draw your attention to the fact that, to date, 140 Member States have recognized the State of Palestine,” the joint letter read, which also listed the names of these countries.
