Islamabad: Pakistani authorities are working to arrest Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is jailed for failing to appear in court in an alleged £190m corruption case. According to the Express Tribune, strict measures are currently being taken following the accountability court’s ruling on November 22. A non-bailable warrant was issued for Bushra’s arrest after she missed eight consecutive hearings.
Bushra Bibi lives in Peshawar
Judge Nasir Javed Rana rejected his request for immunity from appearing in court. Following the directive, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has asked the team in Rawalpindi to arrest Bushra Bibi, officials said. Bushra Bibi is believed to live in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party is in power in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The police came back empty-handed
The Express Tribune reported that on November 23, a team from the NAB went to Peshawar with the police but could only return empty-handed. When the team showed up at Bushra Bibi’s home to serve the arrest warrant, they discovered she was not home, officials said.
The accusation is serious
Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are both accused of embezzling 50bn Pakistani rupees (£190m), which was returned to the UK’s National Crime Agency under an agreement with a property businessman Pakistan. The money, which was supposed to go to the state treasury, was instead used for the personal benefit of businessmen who helped Bushra and Khan build universities. Bibi, as trustee of the Al-Qadir Trust, is accused of benefiting from the deal. Bushra is also accused of acquiring land of 458 kanals for Qadir University in Jhelum. (language)
