Male, Maldives:
Cash-strapped Pakistan on Thursday assured the Maldives of its support in addressing the Indian Ocean island nation’s “urgent development needs”.
Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwar Haq Kakar discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries during a telephone conversation with President Mohammad Muizul, the President’s Office said in a press release.
Muizul also “receives support from the Government of Pakistan to address the pressing development needs of the Maldives,” the statement said.
The two leaders discussed their two countries’ top priorities and spoke of strengthening cooperation on the international stage.
Mr. Kakar also conveyed his support and assistance to the Maldives in its efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change, the release said.
On July 26, 1966, the Maldives and Pakistan established diplomatic relations.
While Pakistan is a close ally of China, President Muizul is also seen as pro-Beijing.
