Nearly two-fifths (33%) of India’s internet users will face some form of internet cyberattack by 2023, according to a new report released on Thursday.

According to data from global cybersecurity company Kaspersky, the country detected and blocked a total of 62,574,546 Internet-borne cyber threats.

“As the world moves towards artificial intelligence and other next-generation technologies, we expect fraud and scam scenarios to become more sophisticated and difficult to detect. Therefore, we urge Indian users to install security solutions on their devices to protect themselves from these networks attack,” said Jaydeep Singh, general manager of Kaspersky South Asia.

The report also shows that cyberattacks via browsers and social engineering are the most popular methods of cyberinfection.

Cybercriminals often exploit vulnerabilities in browsers and their plug-ins to infiltrate user systems. Users are usually attacked when visiting an infected website. The researchers explain that this happens without the user’s knowledge or action and can lead to the download of harmful fileless malware.

Another popular cyber threat in India and around the world is “social engineering” to deceive users.

In social engineering, cybercriminals manipulate users into downloading malicious files and handing over control of the system to the criminals.

Cybercriminals often trick victims into thinking they are downloading a legitimate app or program, and then once the user downloads the program, they take control of the victim’s device and use it for malicious purposes.

“Since many of today’s threat actors hide malicious code to bypass static analysis and emulation, advanced techniques such as machine language-based proactive methods and behavioral analysis are used to combat such threats,” Singh said.
