The SEC on Wednesday (November 26) extended the deadline for submitting objections from November 27 to December 3. According to a statement issued by the SEC, the final voter list will be published on December 10.
The data shows that 4.33 lakh voters appear more than once in the draft electoral roll published last week, with multiple entries ranging from two to 103 times. This takes the total number of duplicate nominations to 11,01,505.
The SEC attributed the duplication of names to factors such as printing errors, transfer of voters and failure to remove names of dead persons. Officials said booth level workers will now visit the field, fill forms and obtain verification undertakings to ensure that each voter is listed only once.
An SEC official indicated that the Mumbai civic elections, scheduled to be completed by January 31, 2026, may be slightly delayed as per the Supreme Court direction.
He said depending on the pace of reforms by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the elections could either be held by the end of January or the SEC could seek extension till the first week of February.
The SEC data further shows that four of the five wards with the highest number of duplicate voters were previously represented by opposition corporators from parties like Shiv Sena (UBT) and Nationalist Congress Party (SP). Two of these wards fall under Worli assembly constituency, which is represented by Sena (UBT) MLA Aditya Thackeray.
Opposition leaders have alleged irregularities in the ongoing revision of the voter list.
In a post on Twitter, Aaditya Thackeray claimed that there were “lakhs” of duplicate names, fake household entries and voter cards lacking basic details.
He warned that refusing to extend the period for suggestions and objections would cast doubt on the fairness of the election process.

Meanwhile, civic officials said a drive to remove duplicate names is currently underway.
A senior BMC official clarified that the figure of 11 lakh refers to the number of repeat entries and not individual persons, adding that the municipal corporation is conducting door-to-door checks to clean up the rolls.
All 25 assistant municipal commissioners have been designated as nodal officers for the reform work, which will run from November 27 to December 5. After this the final voter list is expected to be published.
