A sub-camp of Mauthausen, Gusen is located between the villages of Sankt Georgen an der Gusen and Langstein in the Reichsgau Ostmark, currently known as the Perg district in Upper Austria.

It housed mainly Polish prisoners, although there were also large numbers of Spanish Republicans, Soviet citizens, and Italians.

The prisoners initially worked in the nearby quarries, producing granite which was sold by the SS company DEST.

The life expectancy of prisoners was as low as six months and about 35,000 are believed to have died from forced labor and starvation as well as mass executions.
