Ottawa must pass a law to cancel the digital service tax before the refund is released: CRA

The Canadian Revenue Agency says that taxpayers already paid the Defect Digital Services Tax will have to wait to pass new laws for Ottawa, before they could get their refunds.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced late on Sunday that, Canada was leaving tax on global technical veterans to resume trade talks with the United States.

The first payment was to be made on Monday and can cost American companies such as Amazon and Uber Arabs.

A CRA spokesperson says that the agency had already collected some revenue from the Digital Services Tax before Ottawa was reversed, but did not cite an amount.

The MPs are now on their summer breaks and the spokesperson says that they will need to pass the law to cancel the tax formally on returning to Parliament to get back their money.

Cra waived the need for taxpayers to file DST returns before the June 30 deadline and will not ask for any related payment in the meantime.
