Ottawa – The head of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association says that it is “carefully optimistic”, the federal government will repeal its electric vehicle sales mandate.
Brian Kingston was among several auto industry officials, who met Prime Minister Mark Carney in Ottawa yesterday.
With discussing the impact of the American tariff, the vehicle manufacturers urged Carney to get rid of the EV mandate, saying that there is no way that the industry can meet the goals that determine it.
The mandate policy states that by next year, 20 percent of all new light-duty vehicles sold in Canada should be zero-furious, and this target increases by 2035 to 100 percent annually.
Kingston said that if the vehicle manufacturers cannot meet the target of 2026, they would have to draw about a million gas-powered vehicles from the market to follow the sales mandate.
Statistics Canada’s most recent figures suggest that EV sales in Canada fell to 7.5 percent in April.
