Ontario Public Service Employees Union says 10,000 college faculties and employees have either been allowed to leave or have expected to lose their jobs between the cancellation and suspension from last year.
The union, which represents some 55,000 college faculty and assistant employees, says that “one of the largest mass trimming the largest mass in the history of Ontario”, colleges said the colleges struggling with the funding crisis.
A mediated faculty contract between the Union and the College Employer Council, released last week, stated that the federal government’s cap on international students caused a dramatic decline in enrollment and tuition revenue, and cancellation or suspension of over 600 college programs.
The document shows that 24 out of 24 colleges in Ontario have decreased by 48 percent in the first semester enrollment of international students from September 2023 to September 2024.
It said that 19 colleges have reported the deduction of current and employed employees with more than 8,000 employees till June, given that the data was incomplete as some colleges had not reported their trimmed.
The Sangh says that the sorting and the suspension of the program will have a generational effect and college workers are ready to fight back against the cut.
