Kolkata, October 9 (IANS) Police on Thursday arrested a person in connection with the attack on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Manoj Oraon.
The arrested person has been identified as Ashutosh Mandal, who is said to be a supporter of Trinamool Congress.
The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint lodged by the BJP at Kumargram police station in Alipurduar district.
However, Manoj Oraon was not satisfied with this arrest.
“The police have caught only one attacker. The rest are roaming freely. The police do not have the courage to arrest the other accused.”
On Tuesday, the BJP MLA from Kumargram constituency in Alipurduar district was allegedly attacked by Trinamool Congress workers when he reached a village in his constituency to distribute relief material to people affected by the floods.
The incident occurred just a day after the vehicle of BJP Lok Sabha member Khagen Murmu and party MLA Shankar Ghosh was attacked in Jalpaiguri district when they were going to Nagarakata area with relief material for flood-affected people.
While Khagen Murmu was seriously injured in that attack, again allegedly by Trinamool Congress supporters, Ghosh suffered minor injuries.
Later, speaking to media persons, Oraon alleged that he and his colleagues were stopped from distributing relief material among the flood-affected people by a group of Trinamool Congress workers.
According to BJP leader Oraon, two of the vehicles in which he and his colleagues had come were vandalized.
He also said that his security personnel were also attacked and attempts were made to snatch their weapons.
After the attack, BJP had filed a complaint against five people.
However, Alipurduar district president of Trinamool Congress, Prakash Chik Badaik, claimed that the event was a spontaneous protest of the locals aggrieved by the prolonged absence of Oraons in the area.
